Make a plan
The garage is often packed with stuff, which makes it hard to know where to start. It's tempting to get lost looking through your photo albums or other precious keepsakes from the past, but there's some real tidying to be done. That's why you need to make a plan. How do you want to arrange the garage afterwards? Would it be useful to move things around? Think about exactly what it should look like after the clean-up. It can also be handy to place shelves or racks against the wall, so you have a convenient place to store your belongings.
Let go of things you don't use
It's tempting to store all the things you don't really want to sort through in your garage. But you really need to throw these things away when you finally clean up your garage. That can sometimes be difficult, but remember: decluttering clears the mind. Keep in mind that if you haven't touched something for two years or more, you really can get rid of it.
Use the 'three box' strategy
First, we recommend emptying the garage completely. Then you can see exactly what will fit back in. Once everything is outside the garage, you can start with the 'three box strategy': create three sections to systematically sort all your stuff. Box 1 is for everything you want to keep, box 2 is for things that can go, and box 3 is for things that are still in good condition but that you no longer use. Then you put everything from box 1 back in the garage, throw away everything from box 2, and sell or give away everything from box 3 to someone who can use it or take it to a charity shop.
